City staff, without the knowledge of the Mayor and Council members negotiated a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a Canadian Mining company to use Red Gap Ranch, land we voted to purchase for a possible future water supply, as access from I40 to State lands it plans to test for possible Helium and Hyrdocarbon mining. The company is also allowed to do of some of that testing on Red Gap Ranch as well.
There are a number of documents that have been released that you can see on our website. There is the MOU, the license agreement, the initial notice to the city council from two weeks ago and a press release (see below) from the mining company about their new project in the Flagstaff area.
Friends of Flagstaff’s Future is concerned that staff is making policy (engaging the City with the Fracking industry, a controversial means of extracting fossils fuels) without public notice and participation of the city council and the community. We are hoping this discussion will be an item on Tuesday, February 11th Council Agenda. If it’s not on the Agenda, we are encouraging folks to go to that meeting and speak during public participation at the beginning of the evening session at 6PM and ask council to add this discussion to a future agenda. If you can’t make the meeting please email the council HERE.
